Tolkien and Smith attended King Edward's School in Birmingham together. Smith would also become one of the core members of the T.C.B.S., but not until after Vincent Trought 's death.

    Geoffrey Bache Smith (October 18, 1894 - December 3, 1916) was a close friend of J.R.R. Tolkien and a member of the Tea Club, Barrovian Society. He attended King Edward's School in Birmingham, as did Tolkien, Christopher Wiseman and the other members of the society, where he first became indulged in poetry. Smith would later attend Corpus Christi College in Oxford, while Tolkien went to nearby Exeter College.

    In World War I, Smith served in the "3rd Salford Pals" of the Lancashire Fusiliers. He fought in the Battle of the Somme, at the end of which (in November 1916) he was severely wounded by enemy shrapnel, and died soon afterwards on December 3rd. Two years following, A Spring Harvest was published as a compilation of Smith's poems.

    Smith is portrayed by Northern Irish actor Anthony Boyle in Dome Karukoski's 2019 biographical film Tolkien.
