Oct 4, 2024 · Mary of Nazareth, the mother of Jesus Christ, is one of the most venerated women from the ancient world. Her most common epithet is "the virgin Mary." She is celebrated by Eastern Orthodox Churches, Catholicism, and various Protestant denominations as "the mother of God." In Islam, Surah 19 of the Quran, the surah of Maryam, is devoted to her.
She is an important figure of Christianity, venerated under various titles such as virgin or queen, many of them mentioned in the Litany of Loreto. The Eastern and Oriental Orthodox, Catholic, Anglican, and Lutheran churches believe that Mary, as mother of Jesus, is the Mother of God.
After Jesus ascended to heaven, Mary his mother was, with her sons, among the disciples in Jerusalem who were gathered to pray (Acts 1:13-14). There is no record in the Scriptures of when Joseph, Mary’s husband, died and she became a widow.
Mariamme or the shortened Mary was a popular protest name at the time, which is why there are several ‘Marys’ in the gospels. Jesus means ‘God saves’ or ‘God is generous’. Joseph means ‘May God add….’ (other children); this may mean Joseph was the eldest son in his family.
