The adaptation of Charles Dickens’ comic novel opened in June 1980 at the Aldwych Theatre, initially for an eight-week run.
Dickens, a reformist who targeted many of the social inequities of Victorian England, originally intended his serially published novel The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (1838-1839) to attract attention to the abuses being committed in schools for cast-off children in the Yorkshire area.
