Rumer Godden wrote beautifully but in this case wrote of a very small universe. Black Narcissus is set in the Himalayas above Darjeeling. Five nuns have been sent as an outpost for their Anglican order to start a school, dispensary and a place to do good work among the people who live near what was once a harem, of all things.
