  1. The Whitebeard Pirates were once one of the strongest pirate crews in the world, as their late captain, Edward Newgate, better known as "Whitebeard", was one of the Four Emperors and the only man to have ever been a match for the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, in a fight.

    • Zoro – François L’Olonnais. Zoro — the skilled swordsman and the right-hand man of the Straw Hats — draws inspiration from a famous historical figure. Confirmed by the author, Zoro’s name pays homage to François L’Olonnais, a French sailor renowned as the “most fierce and cruel pirate in the Caribbean Sea.”
    • Eustass Kid – William Kidd and Eustace the monk. Part of the Worst Generation prodigy trio, Eustass Kid is one of the many pirates to have crossed the Straw Hats, both as a friend and a foe, but most of all, as a proud pirate who really disliked losing to Luffy.
    • Trafalgar Law – Edward Low. Trafalgar “Surgeon of Death” Law is also a part of the trio that is leading the Worst Generation of rookie pirates to have ever existed, alongside Kid and Luffy.
    • Marshall D. Teach – Edward Teach. Quite possibly the most obvious of homages, Marshall D. Teach — or Blackbeard — was inspired by the historical figure Edward Teach, who taunted the seas of the West Indies and the eastern coast of Britain’s North American colonies.
  2. Feb 24, 2016 · Yorki, the Rumbar Pirates Captain is based on Calico Jack. Alvida, the Alvida Pirates Captain is based on the pirate Awilda. Thatch, the 4th Division Commander, Whitebeard Pirates' name is based on Edward Thatch.

    • Alvida = Alfhildr. Alvida's historical equivalent is probably one of the most obscure, but also one of my favorites. In , she's one of Luffy's first enemies, captain of her own pirate band, but somewhat portly.
    • Edward Newgate = Newgate Prison. This is one of the more interesting connections in Oda's work – not to a real-life pirate (although there were many with the first name “Edward,” Blackbeard and the vicious Edward Lowe among them), but to a place where pirates were hanged.
    • Jewelry Bonney = Anne Bonny. There's no scarcity of female pirates in , though many of their real-world counterparts are fairly obscure as far as history is concerned.
    • Bellamy = Samuel Bellamy. You don't get much further from the source than 's Bellamy the Hyena stands from his namesake, New England's “Black” Sam Bellamy.
    • WHITEBEARD. Whitebeard is the second greatest pirate in history, having been eclipsed in achievements and bounty only by the Pirate King, Gol D Roger and his crew.
    • KOZUKI ODEN. Oden was a legendary Samurai from Wano country, having been a member of the illustrious Kozuki Clan. Oden was Daimyo of the Kuri district of Wano, where he gathered a ragtag group of followers and turned them into his loyal retainers.
    • BLACKBEARD. This is somewhat of a controversial choice, given the antagonism Blackbeard has caused his former crew since they've departed. Blackbeard is directly involved in the death of both Whitebeard and former fourth division commander Thatch, whilst also playing a major role in Portgas D Ace's death.
    • MARCO THE PHOENIX. Marco can be considered the first son of Whitebeard and is the former first division commander of the Whitebeard crew. Marco is currently operating as a doctor to Whitebeard's hometown, after having served as a de facto leader following Whitebeard's death.
  3. Oct 24, 2024 · Edward Teach, the Real Life Blackbeard, is Arguably One of the Most Famous Pirates. Marshall D.
