Dann Klawon began as the drummer for the band, Dave Smalley and Dan Heckel were the guitarists, and Tom Boles served as lead singer. (Randy Klawon, Dann's brother, did not officially join the band until 1968; but he filled in on drums for one concert in 1966 when he was just 14.)

Klawon began as the drummer, Dave Smalley and Dan Heckel were the guitarist, and Tom Boles was lead singer. They named themselves The Mods. Soon, Heckel and Boles left the band and were replaced by Dave Burke (bass), Wally Bryson (guitar), and Jim Bonfanti (drums). It was at this time that Klawon moved to rhythm guitar.
The Left Banke’s second album Left Banke Too and The Blues Magoos’ Basic Blues Magoos (both ’68) were issued on Mercury (and a subsidiary of), and both were imbued with the same sense of Britishness that The Choir were developing.
