Although Wellman began his film career as an actor, he worked on over 80 films, as director, producer and consultant but most often as a director, notable for his work in crime, adventure and action genre films, often focusing on aviation themes, a particular passion.
Harold Wellman is a geologist with a more varied experience than most. He first came to New Zealand from Britain in 1927 when he was 18, and soon found steady work as a surveyor’s assistant. In 1932, he obtained his own ticket as a registered surveyor, but in the Depression, work was scarce.
