Assumption of the Virgin, oil painting on panel created in 1516–18 by Titian as the altarpiece for the church of Santa Maria dei Frari in Venice, Italy, where it remains. It is among the largest and most influential altarpieces in European art and is one of the artist’s most revolutionary masterpieces.

Titian had a favourite villa on the neighboring Manza Hill (in front of the church of Castello Roganzuolo) from which (it may be inferred) he made his chief observations of landscape form and effect. The so-called Titian's mill, constantly discernible in his studies, is at Collontola, near Belluno.
Titian went on to complete several other influential altar paintings, such as the Death of St Peter Martyr (1526–30, Church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo, now lost), which was considered by Giorgio Vasari to be his greatest work.
Assumption of the Virgin. Rising over twenty-two feet above the main altar, Titian’s Assumption inevitably attracts attention even within the cavernous Gothic space of the Frari church. Framed by the opening within the church’s stone rood screen, the painting can be seen from the main entrance.
