Svein and his brother Harald Harefoot are present when their mother meets with Olaf Haraldsson. Later, Svein and Harald sail to Kattegat with their grandfather, Sweyn Forkbeard.
Svein is installed as the new King of Norwayby Sweyn Forkbeard. When Forkbeard sails to Denmark shortly thereafter, he appoints the boy's mother to act as Queen Regent until such time as he is able to return or the young king reaches the age of majority. Svein is quiet and dutiful, apt to listen while others are speaking and, like his brother, unwaveringly loyal to their grandfather.
Svein is based on Svein Knutsson, the son of Cnut the Great and his first wife Ælfgifu of Northampton. In 1030 Cnut sent Ælfgifu and Svein as regents to rule Norway. Their rule was considered oppressive by the Norwegian because they imposed new taxes and harsh laws. They were expelled in 1034.

Aelfgifu of Northampton (2 January 996-7 January 1015) was the wife of Canute and the mother of Svein Knutsson and Harold Harefoot. Aelfgifu of Northampton was the daughter of Aelfhelm, Ealdorman of York, and her father was killed in 1006 on the orders of King Aethelred the Unready.
Jul 11, 2024 · The real-life Magnus had nothing to do with Svein’s death, and he didn’t even stab Queen Aelfgifu in the Great Hall. He was actually Magnus the Good, who tried to refrain from shedding unnecessary blood and even stopped his pursuit of avenging his father’s death.
