Peter Safar was born in Vienna in 1924. His grandfather, Josef, originated from Lukavice, a small village near Josefstadt in the Adler Mountains, now in the Czech Republic. As a poor teenager, Josef had sought to earn a living in nearby Vienna.
In 1956, Elam met Peter Safar (1924 – 2003) — also an anesthesiologist — and persuaded him to join the effort to convince the world that ventilating the lungs with expired air was effective as part of a resuscitative technique.
In 1947 he met Eva. They shared similar values and a love of music and dancing—they fell in love—and married in 1950 and spent a lifetime of happiness together.
