Born in San Francisco, Calif., on Oct. 12, 1880, Kyne worked as a clerk in a general store, a lumber broker, and a reporter. He served in the Spanish-American War and in World War I. Kyne turned his novel In the Valley of the Giants (1918) into a screenplay for three movies titled The Valley of the Giants , released in 1919, 1927, and 1938.
