Jul 22, 2018 · 1. He probably didn’t burn any cakes. The story of Alfred burning the cakes of a woman whose house he was sheltering in from the Vikings is a famous historical legend. Unaware of who he was, she was said to have roundly scolded her king for his inattentiveness.

Alfred was a son of Æthelwulf, king of Wessex, and his wife Osburh. [5] According to his biographer, Asser, writing in 893, "In the year of our Lord's Incarnation 849 Alfred, King of the Anglo-Saxons", was born at the royal estate called Wantage, in the district known as Berkshire [a] ("which is so called from Berroc Wood, where the box tree grows very abundantly").

Alfred's epithet 'the great' was not given to him in his lifetime but centuries later when Asser's work became more widely known and the significance of Alfred's reign was more fully recognized.
