Military career. World War II. When the United States entered World War II, Glenn quit college to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps. [21] . He was not called to duty by the Army and enlisted as a U.S. Navy aviation cadet in March 1942.
As a Marine fighter pilot in World War II and the Korean War, Glenn flew 149 missions, withstanding 11 hits by enemy fire. Following the Korean War, he served as a test pilot for several years, working with Navy and Marine Corps jet fighters and attack aircraft.
Shortly after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Glenn enlisted in the Naval Aviation Cadet Program and became a Marine pilot. He flew 59 combat missions in the South Pacific during World War II. When the Korean conflict began, Glenn asked for combat duty and flew 63 missions.
