World War II. When the United States entered World War II, Glenn quit college to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps. [21] . He was not called to duty by the Army and enlisted as a U.S. Navy aviation cadet in March 1942.

Upon the end of WWII, Glenn joined Fighter Squadron 218 on North China patrol and had duty on Guam. From June 1948 until December 1950 Glenn was an instructor in advanced flight training at the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station.

He was the first American to orbit the Earth, on board Friendship 7 in February 1962, and before that, a much decorated war veteran, serving as a fighter pilot in both World War II and in Korea, finally retiring as a colonel in 1965.
