The middle colonies included Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware. Advantaged by their central location, the middle colonies served as important distribution centers in the English mercantile system. New York and Philadelphia grew at a fantastic rate.
From the time of the English conquest in 1664, English-sponsored settlement proceeded to fill in the coastal plain of the mid-Atlantic region that linked English colonies to the north and to the south, creating a contiguous zone of settlement along the Atlantic seaboard from New England to Carolina.
