Godfrey MacArthur Cambridge was born on February 26, 1933 in the Harlem section of New York City, New York, United States; the son of Sarah and Alexander Cambridge, who had emigrated from British Guiana to Sydney, Nova Scotia, before arriving in New York.
Cambridge is probably best known for his leading roles in the popular films Watermelon Man (1970) and Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970). In addition to his film appearances, Cambridge was a successful stand-up comedian. His sense of humor, while not alienating to white audiences, did not lack bite.
