Ernst Barlach is born on 2 January in Wedel, Holstein, as the first of four sons to the doctor Georg Barlach and his wife Louise, née Vollert. In 1872 the family moves to Schönberg in Mecklenburg, in 1877 to Ratzeburg.
Born near Hamburg, Barlach was a sculptor, printmaker and writer. From around 1896, he worked in an art nouveau style. However, after visiting his brother in Russia in 1906, he was struck by the solid and sturdy figures of the Russian peasants.
