Life. Born in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, he trained as a blacksmith who started a hardware business at Winchester then moved to Portsea, Portsmouth. Here he improved on the "detector" lock, originally patented in 1818 by his brother, Jeremiah Chubb. [1]

Charles and Jeremiah Chubb, having patented the lock, decided to move in 1818 and manufacture locks in Wolverhampton—known since the seventeenth century as the centre of English lock-making.

PEOPLE IN PORTSMOUTH. CHARLES CHUBB (1772–1846) - LOCKSMITH. The name of Chubb has been synonymous with the most secure form of locks for 200 years and it was in Portsea that the family business established itself in 1804.
Frequent crimes, including daring robberies of the dockyard warehouses and escapes from the hulks led to a competition being launched for an ‘unpickable lock’. The Chubb brothers accepted the challenge and created the now familiar Chubb lock still used to this day.
1828 Jeremiah Chubb, having lived in America as a machinist, returned to Britain. 1830 Charles established a lock factory in Temple Street, Wolverhampton. This led to great rivalry between Chubb and other Wolverhampton locksmiths, resulting in lock-picking contests held in public.
