Dame Catherine Ann Cookson, DBE (née McMullen; 20 June 1906 – 11 June 1998), was a British writer. She is in the top 20 of the most widely read British novelists, with sales topping 100 million, while she retained a relatively low profile in the world of celebrity writers.
Before her death, Catherine Cookson had written nearly a hundred books, which have been translated in more than a dozen languages. She also wrote novels under pseudonyms like Catherine Marchant and Katie McMullen.
Catherine Cookson was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for her services to literature and philanthropy in 1985, and she then became Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire eight years later.
