Jan 4, 2022 · Answer. Alexander the coppersmith in the Bible was a man who did significant harm to Paul’s ministry (2 Timothy 4:14). The word coppersmith is translated from the Greek word chalkeus, which means “brazier” or “a worker of metals.”.
The pseudonymous author of 2 Tim. therefore names Alexander χαλκεύς, and refers also to him the βλασφημεῖν of 1 Timothy 1:20.— κατασείσας τὴν χεῖρα, see on Acts 12:17.— ἀπολ.: peculiar to Luke and Paul, twice in St. Luke’s Gospel, and six times in Acts, so in Romans 2:15, 2 Corinthians 12:19.
Alexander the coppersmith (also referred to as Alexander the metalworker in the NIV) is mentioned by Paul in his letter to Timothy in Ephesus in 2 Timothy 4:14. Paul warned Timothy to "beware of him" because he "strongly opposed" the gospel message and did Paul "great harm" (2 Timothy 4:14–15).
It's unclear who Alexander is. That he comes from "the Jews" suggests he's a member of the synagogue and does not follow Jesus. If so, it's possible God doesn't allow him to speak because he would encourage the crowd's violence against the church.
33 The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander to the front, and they shouted instructions to him. He motioned ( A ) for silence in order to make a defense before the people. 34 But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
Alexander the coppersmith — Or brasier; did me much evil — This seems to have been the person mentioned 1 Timothy 1:20: probably he was one of the Judaizing teachers, who violently opposed the true doctrine of the gospel.
Acts 4:5 tn Or “law assembled,” “law met together.” Acts 4:6 sn The high priest’s family. This family controlled the high priesthood as far back as a.d. 6. Annas, Caiaphas, and Alexander were all high priests at one time (though Alexander held that office after this event). Acts 4:7 tn Grk “And after.”
