Ernst Heinrich Barlach (2 January 1870 – 24 October 1938) was a German expressionist sculptor, medallist, printmaker and writer. Although he was a supporter of the war in the years leading to World War I, his participation in the conflict made him change his position, and he is mostly known for his sculptures protesting against the war.
Barlach deeply admired the work of Käthe Kollwitz, and like her relief nearby, this expressionist bronze, first sculpted in 1914, is a response to the Great War. Like many of his artist contemporaries, Barlach was a hopeful nationalist at the outset of the conflict.

Barlach’s path to expressionism led through the academic traditions of the 19th century and the creative ideas of naturalism, symbolism and art nouveau. In 1906 a journey to Russia gave him the decisive motivation for a radical simplification and monumentalisation of his visual imagery.
