Feb 8, 2012 · The Lesender Klosterschüler described in Andersch's Flight to Afar was constructed by the artist Ernst Barlach in 1930 and is one of a number of ‘reading monks' that he created in both drawings and sculptures over many years.
In The Judge and His Hangman , Barlach forgoes the arrest of a murderer in order to manipulate him into killing another, more elusive criminal. And in Suspicion , Barlach pursues a former Nazi doctor by checking into his clinic with the hope of forcing him to reveal himself.
Primary sources are the first-hand evidence with which historians form a foundation of knowledge of the past. Interpreting them requires attention to four key areas: the author, the audience, the intent, and the context.
