    The fourth series of the UK version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? ran for twelve consecutive nights on ITV, from 3 to 14 September 1999. It was hosted by Chris Tarrant.

    The series featured thirteen episodes, with two airing on 11 September 1999 to coincide with the premiere of the second series of Cilla Black's game show The Moment of Truth. It was the first series to be broadcast in the widescreen (16:9) format. The episode of 4 September 1999 (coincidentally, the show's first anniversary) saw Jonathan Green become the first contestant to win £250,000.

    •In a change to the studio set-up, the case of money that had been attached to the podium since the show's premiere was removed, leaving only the monitors and chairs. Chris Tarrant has explained that in the event there was a jackpot win, he would have had to open the briefcase, yet it was feared that, potentially, £50 notes could have gone everywhere if he did it wrongly, possibly giving money to the audience and not the contestant.
