Oct 27, 2006 · Paul Anastasio began playing the violin at age nine and he was soon drawn to the sounds of fiddle tunes, bluegrass music and hot swing. In his early 20s Paul began studying jazz violin with the great Joe Venuti. His first job on the road was with Merle Haggard's backup band, 'The Strangers'.
Paul Anastasio has played bluegrass, old time fiddling, western swing, country, traditional jazz, swing and bebop. After studying jazz violin with the pioneering Joe Venuti, Paul spent many years working in the bands of Merle Haggard, Asleep at the Wheel, Larry Gatlin, Loretta Lynn and many others.
These classes are an incredible opportunity to learn how to improvise on swing, jazz, and Western Swing songs on the fiddle. I teach a particular type of playing influenced by Johnny Gimble, Louis Tierney, Stephane Grappelli, Joe Venuti, Kieth Coleman, Svend Assmussen, Paul Anastasio, and Didier Lockwood — to name a few.

Born at an early age in a little log cabin he built with his own hands, Paul Anastasio began studying the violin at the age of nine. A few years later, while continuing to study classical violin, he began to explore the worlds of bluegrass, Texas-style fiddling, western swing, and swing.
