Historical Description. Dartford, a town and a parish in Kent. The town stands in a narrow valley, between two steep hills, on Watling Street, and the river Darent, and has a station on the S.E.R., 16 miles from London.
Some of the iron made in the Kentish Weald found its way to Dartford where, in 1590, Godfrey Box, an immigrant from Liege, set up the first slitting mill in England for cutting iron bars into rods. The engineering industry at Dartford claims a long ancestry. Dartford was also a pioneer town in paper-making.
In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Dartford like this: Dartford, market town and par. with ry. sta., W. Kent, on river Darent, 17 miles E. of London by rail, 4251 ac. and 183 ac. tidal water and foreshore, pop. 10,163; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank, 3 newspapers.

The human settlement of the Darent Valley dates to more than 400,000 years ago. On the outskirts of the scheme area, the remains of the so-called ‘Swanscombe Skull’ were discovered close to Dartford. These were identified as being from a woman in her early twenties, and were dated as being some 300,000 years old.
