Jul 27, 2022 · Iain McLachlan’s fame in the piping world stems from a 1958 composition that became the hugely popular air “The Dark Island.” Though he also played pipes, fiddle and melodeon, Iain was best known for his musical expertise on the three-row Shand Morino button accordian, on which he was regarded as Scotland’s finest exponent.
The Dark Island is a six-part British television miniseries, produced by Gerard Glaister for the BBC. It premièred on 8 July 1962. It was later adapted for radio, which was transmitted in 1969.

Benbecula is the Dark Island, located in Outer Hebrides between South and North Uist. The interest for that island began at least with a six parts British television series, broadcast from 1963 and set on Benbecula. The tune is a Pipe Lament wrote (or adapted from another air) in 1958.
This beautiful and popular air was originally called Dr Mackay's Farewell to Creagorry by its composer Iain McLachlan. When David Silver of Inverness, was asked to write a song for a BBC Thriller called "The Dark Island", filmed in Benbecula, he used McLachlan壮 air and set words to it, inspired by the island of Benbecula.
