In 2012, Sonequa Martin-Green was cast in a recurring role on The Walking Dead as Sasha, the sister of Tyreese (Chad Coleman), an original character, exclusive to the television series. Martin-Green auditioned for the role of Michonne albeit with a pseudonym due to the secrecy of the auditioning process.

Martin is an antagonist and a survivor of the outbreak in AMC's The Walking Dead. He is a member of the Hunters and served as one of the two secondary antagonists for the first half of Season 5 (along with O'Donnell).

Nothing is known about Martin's life prior to or as the outbreak began. It is possible he is from Michigan as evidence of wearing a Detroit Tiger's hat. Though he stated that he would often watch football on Sundays and attended church regularly.
At some point following the outbreak, Martin arrived at the safe haven known as Terminus and joined the survivors residing there. Martin tries to escape only to be pushed against the altar rail by Sasha, who proceeds to brutally stab him several times in the chest and at least one time in the neck with a knife.

Martin, portrayed by Chris Coy, is one of the few survivors of Terminus after it is destroyed by Carol's siege. He is first discovered by Carol and Tyreese while he is alone on a scouting mission, and they overhear him talking on the radio about the hostages that Terminus has just taken.
