A young journalist asks an old artist about the portrait of a naked Indian woman that he has in his study. The artist tells the story of Maria Candelaria, a young Indian woman who was rejected by her own people for being the daughter of a prostitute. She is protected by a young Indian man, Lorenzo Rafael, who has fallen in love with her.
María Candelaria's current predicament begins when local big shot Don Damian (Miguel Inclán) calls in a debt but refuses to accept produce as payment in kind, instead demanding either money or the piglet.
María Candelaria is segregated for being a prostitute’s child and the couple faces the greed of Mr. Damian, the town’s shop owner who secretly desires María. When María falls sick with Malaria, Lorenzo Rafael steals a quinine bottle from Damian’s shop, unleashing tragedy for the lovers.
