In about 1806 Charles William Bigge, a successful Newcastle banker, bought an estate of almost 3,000 acres (1,200 ha) at Longhorsley, which had been owned by the family of the Earl of Carlisle since the 12th century. In 1813 he built a mansion house on the estate for his own occupation.
Linden Hall was built in as a family residence in 1812 by merchant, banker and former High Sherriff of Northumberland, Charles William Bigge, but the design and construction were overseen by his close friend Sir Charles Monck, who was elected to Parliament to represent Northumberland in 1812.
Macdonald Hotels has said it is close to signing a deal with a private equity investor that would see it sell off 27 of its hotels, including Linden Hall, near Longhorsley, in Northumberland.
