When was Glen Garioch made?
Glen Garioch distillery (pronounced "Geery" in the Doric dialect of Aberdeen) is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is one of the oldest whisky distilleries in Scotland, dating back to 1797.
In 1970 Glen Garioch was then sold to Stanley P. Morrison, who owned the Bowmore distillery at the time. Production resumed and, in 1972, Joe Hughes was appointed manager and tasked with finding a new water source in the area.
Apr 2, 2022 · Glen Garioch’s Oldmeldrum distillery announces its re-opening to the public for the first time in two years, following a £6 million investment by owner Beam Suntory. The distillery has been fully renovated, returning it to traditional processes such as floor malting and direct-fired stills and reducing its carbon footprint.
In 1970 the distillery was sold to Stanley P. Morrison, the Glasgow whisky broker and owner of Bowmore Distillery. Morrison resumed production and in 1972 appointed Joe Hughes as manager, with a brief to find another water source.
Whatever the date of its formation, Glen Garioch survived when other eastern distilleries foundered. This was initially thanks to its ownership by blenders J.F. Thompson of Leith in 1884. William Sanderson of Vat 69 (at that point one of the top-selling blends in the world) became a partner in 1886 and took full control in 1908.
