The Ashdown Forest and Tunbridge Wells Golf Club was founded by four men; brothers William R. and Francis A. Lee, who chose the site, the first Honorary Secretary Robert Birch, and Rev A.T. Scott. W.R. Lee has been credited with designing the original layout of the Old Course.

WR Lee designed the original layout of the Old Course, and Harry Hunter made changes in 1892 before he and Jack Rowe (the Ashdown professional for 55 years from 1892 to 1947) made further alterations in 1897. The last significant changes were made in 1922, again by Rowe.

The Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club occupies a large area of leasehold land in the northern part of the forest near Forest Row. It is a traditional members' club founded in 1888 at the instigation of Earl De La Warr, lord of the manor, who became its first president.

In 2001 the partnership with the Ashdown Forest Hotel ceased and the hotel site was sold for development.
