The medical college at the London Hospital, now the Royal London Hospital, opened in 1785. It was England's first purpose-built medical school, pioneering a new kind of medical education, with an emphasis on theoretical and clinical teaching.
In 1995 the college, along with that attached to the Royal London, merged into Queen Mary University of London, but maintains a distinctive identity. It is now known as Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry .
It was founded with a donation by the entrepreneur and philanthropist Sir David Robinson and formally opened in 1981. Its location on the west side of the city is quiet, away from tourists, and everyone can sit on the grass in our beautiful gardens!
