Gormanston must have housed many an old book and record in its more prosperous days. Three ancient records survive, which throw light on the history of its owners and the part they played in the political life of this country. Of these the most famous is the Gormanston Register, which is still in the custody of the Preston family.

The current holder of the title is the 17th Viscount Gormanston, who resides in London. Elizabeth Gorman, painter, lived here. The family sold the castle in the 1950s, when it was acquired by the Franciscan Order of Friars who then established a boarding school for boys in the grounds, known as Gormanston College. [6]
The Preston family, who built Gormanston Castle in 1786, have held the title of Viscounts Gormanston since the 14th century. According to local tradition, the foxes of Co Meath gather in the castle precincts when a member of the Preston family is about to die.
