The Whiskey Bottle Gravestone of William T. Mullen is located in the town cemetery in Clayton, Barbour County. Mullen's wife marked his resting place in this manner after he refused to stop drinking himself to death.
His wife told him that if he didn't quit drinking, and the drinking killed him, that she was going to have his tombstone made in the shape of a whiskey bottle. According to the story, even William's doctor told him to quit drinking.
Jan 11, 2022 · Mullen lived hard and died young. He was born in Talbotton, Georgia, on June 18, 1834. By 1860 he had moved to Clayton and met the county jailor’s daughter, a young woman named Mary Williams.
In 1863 William Mullen died at the young age of 29. His wife kept a promise she’d made often during life. She told her husband that if he drank himself to death, she would embarrass him by erecting a tombstone in the shape of a whiskey bottle.
