Oskar’s grandpa is one of the novel’s main narrators, although his narration is done largely through writing in the form of letters and pages in his “daybooks.” This is because Grandpa is mute—an aftereffect of surviving the ghastly Dresden firebombing during World War II, in which Grandpa lost his lover, Anna, and their unborn child.
