Making movies is a team effort, but we can all agree directors are a pretty important part of that equation. And 2021 was a real showcase for talented filmmakers who are at the top of their respective games.

Denis Villeneuve performed magic with Dune, taking what were for so long thought of as the “unfilmable” words of Frank Herbert and putting them right onto a screen for us to see in all their glory. The sheer scale of Dune is something to behold - from its monolithic architecture, sky-filling ships, and monstrous score, it can all be a little overwhelming at times. Yet, Villeneuve manages to keep it expertly tied together by rooting it in personal and emotional bonds that everyone can relate to, such as someone trying to find their place in the world or the love between a parent and a child. An unrivaled spectacle, Dune makes good on a promise that many thought may never be delivered, and Denis Villeneuve deserves immense credit for making it happen. -Simon Cardy

The makings of Bo Burnham: Inside are humble - a comedian in his guest house single-handedly putting together a "comedy" special - but a lot came together to make it one of the most unforgettable pieces of quarantine viewing. It wasn't only Burnham's intense and often uncomfortable vulnerability that made Inside such a gripping watch, but his skill...
Thank goodness James Gunn finally got his crack at The Suicide Squad. The master of lovable misfits was the perfect fit for the D-list group of villains' second attempt at the big screen, perfectly juggling shlocky violence, hilarious one-liners, and, at times, genuinely moving character development. A story this masterfully handled could only come from someone who truly loves this ragtag group of weirdos, and who knows how to give a wide and disparate ensemble time to shine. Only Gunn (and Certified Comedy Genius John Cena) could make me look forward to revisiting that darn Peacemaker in HBO Max's upcoming spinoff series. -Alex Stedman

The job of a fantasy film is to transport us to a world unlike our own. Director David Lowery masterfully achieves this as we’re swept away to The Green Knight’s medieval realm of fables where towering giants and axe-wielders built from bark roam its land. The deliberate pacing allows for every second to be absorbed to its fullest, as a singular vision of an unfamiliar land riddled with familiar temptations fills the screen. Lowery delicately balances every painting of a frame in the palm of his hand, while also squeezing a pitch-perfect lead performance from Dev Patel in the other. A film unlike any other this year, and one directed with grace and confidence. -Simon Cardy

Screenwriter Tony Kushner initially thought Steven Spielberg had "lost his mind" when the director told him he wanted to remake West Side Story. But with the help of the late lyricist Stephen Sondheim and armed with a new, updated screenplay from Kushner, Spielberg was able to accomplish the impossible, creating a love letter to the legacies of the original 1957 musical and 1961 film, while simultaneously crafting an exhilarating masterpiece that fully stands on its own. His love of his young, exhausted, and frequently bloodstained characters shines through in each musical number set against the rubble of a 1950s New York in transition, and he takes special care to frame every heartbeat in their emotional journeys through hope, grief and ultimately resignation. Every shot either brims with action or simmers with passion, making for a gripping and memorable experience that begs for an immediate rewatch. -Bob Marshall

Oct 20, 2021 · Timothée Chalamet leans heavily on callowness in his early portrayal of Paul Atreides, and shakes it off compellingly as his character realizes his power and understands how to Follow His Destiny. Oscar Isaac is noble as Paul’s dad the Duke; Rebecca Ferguson both enigmatic and fierce as Jessica, Paul’s mother.
