St John's College is one of the recognised colleges of Durham University. The college was established in 1909 as a Church of England theological college and became a full constituent college of the university in 1919.
St John’s College was founded in 1909 as a theological college for the training of Anglican ordinands. In 1919 we became a full constituent college of the University and expanded and flourished over the following decades.
At St John’s we preserve collegiate traditions. Johnians matriculate in our 12th-century chapel, in addition to the Cathedral; we wear gowns for weekly formal dinners, and still say grace in Latin.
Chapel. Our College Chapel is the Church of St Mary the Less which was founded around 1140, extensively renovated in 1847, and acquired by St John's College in 1919.

May 23, 2023 · We’re proud to welcome Professor Jolyon Mitchell as the new Principal of St John’s College. Professor Mitchell, who is currently at New College, University of Edinburgh, is due to take up the role as head of St John’s on 1 September 2023.
