Mary Shakespeare (née Arden; c. 1537 — September 1608) [a] was the mother of William Shakespeare. Biography. Mary was born about 1536 in Wilmcote, the daughter of Robert Arden, a gentleman farmer and junior descendant of the Arden family, [4][5] who were prominent in Warwickshire.
Mary’s father, Robert Arden, was a member of the Guild of the Holy Cross, an important communal Stratford institution. Upon his death, Robert left Mary a significant amount of land in Wilmcote together with a sum of £6 13s 4d (equivalent to £30,000 in current value).
