    • Lenny Bruce. The most obvious real-life character is Lenny Bruce. In the series, Lenny’s (Luke Kirby) successful and controversial career overlaps with Midge’s start on the scene, and he becomes something of a mentor and champion for her career.
    • Shy Baldwin. Shy is a handsome and famous crooner Midge meets during a telethon. After seeing her perform, he hires her to open for him on tour. While Brosnahan has said that Shy is an amalgamation of many different singers from that era, she has also specifically pointed to Johnny Mathis as the one she feels has the strongest ties with the character.
    • Susie Meyerson. Susie, Midge’s poor, crass, and tomboyish agent, is played beautifully by Alex Borstein. And while the character is fictional, Borstein has taken inspiration from another famous Sue to help guide the character: Sue Mengers.
    • Moms Mobley. In the final episode of season three, Wanda Sykes appears at the Apollo as an elderly and famous comedian known as Moms Mabley. In real life, Loretta Mary Aiken, stage name Jackie “Moms” Mabley, appeared on series like the Ed Sullivan Show and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
    • Gordon Ford. Based On Johnny Carson. There are a handful of details hinting at Gordon’s likeness to iconic late-night host Johnny Carson. Gordon’s laissez-faire attitude to the bonds of marriage lines up with the timeline of Carson’s first marriage, which was likewise rife with infidelities.
    • Moms Mabley. Based On Moms Mabley. This real comic appeared in a single episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Mabley’s real act was used when she opens for Midge and Shy at the Apollo theater; as mentioned, Moms Mabley had a working relationship with Harry Bellafonte, who may have influenced Shy.
    • Shy Baldwin. Based On Johnny Mathis/Harry Belafonte. It’s hard to name a single influence for Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain). Co-writer Daniel Sherman said (via Parade) “We were inspired by a lot of African American crooners at the time, like Johnny Mathis.”
    • Sophie Lennon. Based On Phyllis Diller/Totie Fields. Sophie represents the establishment of female comedians in Midge’s time. The two real people after whom Sophie is most overtly modeled are highly successful female comedians Phyllis Diller and Totie Fields, about whom Palladino-Sherman said (via Parade) “women back then couldn’t just be a woman onstage; they had to dress as a ‘character,’ a lot of these female comics were well-educated and into the arts, not those crazy, strange caricatures.”
