Chapter 2: Summary. Chapter 2 begins with a description of the Valley of Ashes, a desolate and grey land that marks the city’s intersection with the suburbs. It is here that the ashes of New York are dumped.
He calls it a "Valley of Ashes," because it's where ashes from the city are dumped. This grim landscape is home to destitute men and a billboard of an eye doctor who's no longer in business. The billboard shows two huge spectacled eyes that seem to watch over the valley.
