Kondo is a kind individual, caring for his fellow Shinsengumi, especially with Hijikata Toshizō and Okita Sōji, which he treats both of them like brothers. Additionally, he has a strong sense in Bushidō, the way of the samurai, which he follows extremely, even until his death in 1868.

Jul 14, 2013 · Kondo Isami, the “Devil” commander of the Shinsengumi was one of Japan’s greatest national heroes and a peerless swordsman who devoted his life to protecting the shogun and fighting on the side of the Tokugawa.
Kondō created a new unit, Kōyō Chinbutai (甲陽鎮撫隊, Pacification Corps), based on the surviving remnants of the Shinsengumi and led them under the alias of Okubo Tsuyoshi. They departed from Edo for Kōfu Castle on March 24 on orders to suppress uprisings there.
