The one who is killed in a war by any means of fighting. He comes under the heading of martyrs who are rewarded in the Hereafter and he comes under the rulings on martyrs in this world, i.e., he should not be washed and the funeral prayer should not be offered for him.

In Quran, the ones who had died in the way of Allah are called الَّذِينَ قُتِلُواْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ (the ones who died in the way of Allah), and they aren't called shahid in any ayat. In Quran, the word shahid is used in a more general and different way.
Answer. The ‘Ulama have cited three types of Shahids: 1. One who is considered a Shahid in this world as well as in the Hereafter. This is one who dies in combat against the enemies of Islam. A Shahid in this world is one on whom the rules of a Shahid apply, like not being given ghusl (a bath) after his demise.
Meaning: Besides being martyred in the path of Allah Almighty, there are seven types of martyrs as well. 1. The one who passes away due to plague. 2. The one who passes away due to drowning. 3. The one who passes away in pleurisy. 4. The one who passes away due to an abdominal disease.

Ibn Majah. A woman can also be considered a martyr if she dies during childbirth. Similarly, dying of drowning, or burning, or of pleurisy comes under the same. It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abdullah bin Jabir bin ‘Atik, from his father, that his grandfather fell sick and the Prophet (ﷺ) came to visit him.
