On 4th July 1569 St Francis Drake married his young sweetheart Mary Newman in St Budeaux Church on the Tamar estuary. While Drake was to become a household name and the greatest seaman of the Elizabethan Age his Cornish wife remains an obscure figure.
He was the eldest of the twelve sons [9] of Edmund Drake (1518–1585), a Protestant farmer, and his wife, Mary Mylwaye. The first son was said to have been named after his godfather, Francis Russell, 2nd Earl of Bedford. [10] Due to religious persecution during the Prayer Book Rebellion in 1549, the Drake family fled from Devon to Kent.

In 1569 Drake married Mary Newman who was to be a lonely wife. In 1570, 1571 and 1572, Drake was sailing to the Caribbean determined to reap revenge. He captured Nombre de Dios and in 1573 seized thousands of pounds worth of treasure when he ambushed the mule trains that carried the treasure across the Panamanian isthmus for shipment to Spain.
