In fact, John makes it clear that his purpose for writing the book is to bless God’s people: “Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near” (Revelation 1:3).
In the opening paragraph, the author identifies himself as John, which could refer to the author of the Gospel and letters of John, or it could be another leader in the early Church. Whichever John it was, he makes it clear in the opening paragraph that this book is a “revelation.”
Jan 19, 2022 · Take a look at the basic structure of the Book of Revelation; its major interpretations; the various perspectives on the Millennial Kingdom mentioned in Revelation 20; and how key events shaped John the Apostle and his writing.
- The book is visual prophecy. One of the first things that help us understand the book is understanding what kind of book it is. John tells us in the opening chapter that what he has written is a prophecy from Jesus.
- This prophecy was given to John in a series of visions. I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet saying, Write what you see.
- Revelation is full of symbolism. Because Revelation is a vision, it is full of symbolism. Revelation often has references to symbolism from other prophecies and visions, like the visions of Daniel, Ezekiel, and Zechariah.
- Numbers are symbolic. Numbers in Revelation are flexible and symbolic. For instance, the number seven represents wholeness and completeness. It is Gods perfect number.
The apostle John wrote the book of Revelation around the year AD 95 from his exile on the island of Patmos. He addressed his work to seven Asian churches—Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.
Apr 2, 2024 · A simple outline for the book of Revelation is found in Revelation 1:19. In the first chapter, the risen and exalted Christ is speaking to John. Christ tells John to “write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later.”

The modern consensus is that a Johannine community produced the Gospel of John and the three Johannine epistles, while John of Patmos wrote the Book of Revelation separately. [c][15][16] The book is commonly dated to about AD 95, as suggested by clues in the visions pointing to the reign of the emperor Domitian. [17]
