The Gospel of John. Authorship. The Apostle John is usually credited with the authorship of the fourth Gospel. First of all, the author had to have been an eyewitness of the ministry of Jesus (1:14; 19:35; 21:24).

John’s Gospel begins with John the Baptist’s introduction to Jesus: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). Jesus’ crucifixion occurred on “the day of Preparation of the Passover” (John 19:14), the day when Passover lambs would be sacrificed in Jerusalem.
However, the John Rylands fragment, discovered in the 1920s, has been documented to be a small portion of a copy of the gospel of John dated between AD 125 and 150.
