John Dickson Carr (November 30, 1906 – February 27, 1977) was an American author of detective stories, who also published using the pseudonyms Carter Dickson, Carr Dickson, and Roger Fairbairn. He lived in England for a number of years, and is often grouped among "British-style" mystery writers.
Several of Carr’s works were made into movies, including The Man with a Cloak, Dangerous Crossing, The Emperor’s Snuff-Box, That Woman Opposite, The Burning Court and La Chambre ardente. Several of his works were adapted for television. The TV series, Colonel March of Scotland Yard, was based on his stories.
“The Mad Hatter Mystery” was the second book in the series featuring Dr. Gideon Fell that was written by John Dickson Carr. A man named Philip Driscoll is making a name for himself by writing up bizarre crimes where different hats are being taken and later returned to other, strange places.
