John Akomfrah's 'The Unfinished Conversation' (2012) constitutes a recent, fascinating negotiation of identity and difference. Sir John Akomfrah CBE RA (born 4 May 1957 [1]) is a Ghanaian-born British artist, writer, film director, screenwriter, theorist and curator of Ghanaian descent, whose "commitment to a radicalism both of politics and of cinematic form finds expression in all his films".
A co-founder of the influential London-based Black Audio Film Collective (established in 1982), Akomfrah’s work interweaves newly shot film sequences with archival material to create multilayered, at times associative collages, frequently in the form of simultaneous narrative structures.
John Akomfrah works primarily in film and video, exploring place, memory, and history through the lens of postcolonialism and the black diaspora. His work takes many formats, ranging from feature-length documentaries to immersive, multichannel video installations, while employing both original and archival footage.
