He was friends with Roman Polański and Witold Leszczyński, and partook of the School's boisterous social life. Valued for his good taste, he started his filmmaker's career as a set designer on films directed by Antoni Bohdziewicz: Szkice węglem (Charcoal Sketches), Kalosze szczęścia (Lucky Galoshes) and Rzeczywistość (Reality).
He was a director and writer, known for Mala matura 1947 (2010), Sublokator (1966) and Excentrycy, czyli po slonecznej stronie ulicy (2015). He was married to Zofia Nasierowska. He died on 10 January 2024 in Poland.

In the years 1983-1990, Janusz Majewski was the chairman of the Polish Filmmakers Association, and since 2006, he has served as Honorary Chairman. In the years 1987-1991, he was a member of the Committee of Cinematography. In 2012, he was elected Rector of the Warsaw Film School.
