In December, I spoke with Webster about the relief of sex, the breaking of boundaries, and the possibilities of psychoanalysis. This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity. I recently listened to a lecture by psychoanalyst Darian Leader with a refreshingly blunt title: What is sex?
Somewhat to his surprise, Critchley’s suggestion was to interview him and his wife Jamieson Webster—psychoanalyst and co-author with Critchley of works including Stay, Illusion!: The Hamlet Doctrine —about love in light of the recent breakup of their marriage.
Jamieson Webster is a psychoanalyst in New York City; she teaches at The New School, is a founding member of Das Unbehagen, and a graduate of The Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. Her first book is The Life and Death of Psychoanalysis (London: Karnac, 2011).
