Parrying is a defensive and offensive mechanic in Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles. When correctly executed, it will bring you an advantage that could change the future of a match. However, it’s a difficult feature to master.

In theory, performing a parry is simple enough. You need to press the guard button and move the left stick in any direction at the same time. Your character will produce a blue circle around them for a brief moment. If the opponent hits you while the circle is up, you’ll interrupt his attack and be able to make a counter-attack.

However, timing and being able to predict your enemy’s movements are everything. Parrying is a precise mechanic that has a simple input but it’s hard to master. Perform the action a second too early or late and you’ll be punished by the other player.

Make sure that you know when you are doing a parry and when a shove. A shove is a defensive mechanic that creates a distance between your rival and you. Both actions are performed by pressing the same buttons, but the timing — and the intention — are different.

Contrary to parrying, shoving requires you to guard and then tilt the left stick in any direction. Your shield will expand and throw away your enemy a few steps. This is recommended when you need to create distance and, for example, charge your skill gauge. On the other hand, parrying is more focused on attacking your opponent.

A good way to start practicing your parry skills is to play Practice Mode. You can select your favorite character, any opponent, and put an easy IA difficulty in the pause menu options. Your enemy will be more or less aggressive and do readable attacks.

Another useful option is to try to parry the regular demons in Main Story Mode. When they are buffed — indicated by a red and purple aura —, you can parry their attacks and end the match in a single blow. These fights — with the exception of the Special Missions ones — are in normal difficulty and encourage you to try this mechanic.
